UNIMOG
A memoir of a car design student.
The beginning of a car design's professional career is very competitively especially if it is starting from 2020. One wrong move and you are finished. There is always someone to take your place.
This has always haunted me! But it never stopped me from asking hard questions;
Can we consciously discourage Marketing biases in the design such as ''target segment...etc"? Car designers should adopt a sociologistic or psychologistic approach to aesthetics?
What is the word "premium" or "dynamic " mean in philosophical terms?
Why are we designers obsessively Concerned about how light reflects on the surface of a car when the whole world is burning behind them.?(figuratively!)
I have faith in these questions, but I am unequipped in dealing with such questions as we have just been trained to design pretty cars.
whom do I talk to with these questions?
One is often ignored by the rest of peers for such points of view. The blame was on me for a "philosophical approach! ". ?
Why one gets isolated from social circumstances and asks;
"We as humans are faced with such a crisis of global congestion and compulsive consumption, Are we in a decline in human values? ''
The person asking these questions is always misunderstood.
This statement is not for an egoistic benefit. It is a real existential concern. sadly no one cares.
The psychological outcome makes me angry and sad from the inside and making me afraid to draw cars anymore. Sadly such free-thinking is not encouraged, neither one's contribution gets recognized as the result of the work is deviated from what is "accepted" or having a "bad taste of design". The one is Just tossed away for redundancy. Which affects the individual's confidence to perform.
what does one do?
-Make a portfolio half-heartedly?
-Applies to a design studio, and then just to get rejected?
Atmospheric at school :
Recently I have been involved in classroom projects in collaboration with
Lamborghini Ducati and Italdesign At SPD, Milan. The experience helped me to gain more proficiency with skills and management of time. This made me realize the actual ability, which can contribute to the team's progress.
I had adapted to a work process, to which academics call it a "cybernetic loop", in which my input by work of design is a chaotic and BlueSky nature to which I depend on the team's goodwill for feedback and improvement.
But rather one was discouraged from making "mistakes !". we were kept under constant pressure for perfection. In the hope to catch the attention of Filippo Perini or Mitja Borkert.
The Creative scope was only given most Confident and most skilled peers The rest of us just flesh with no brains for support.
which made me realize the selection process for a car designer favors still elitism, nothing has changed since the 1950ies in our glamourous field car designer.
we need more wake up calls like the Tesla cyber-truck, it is like a punch to the face for our '' Industry''. There is a meta-modern revolution coming! and I am in search of people with likeminded to take it forward. but I am not sure what the plan of action is?
